Here's my advice on how to get a TIE - Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero

Disclaimer: the following words are solely based on my experience. Even though the list of requirements are listed on the government website, I discovered there were more items required that were not on the list. Why? Who knows!

From July 2020, Brits living in Spain have been allowed to apply for an ID card known as the Tarjeta Identidad de Extranjero (TIE) - (pronounced "tee-eh"). Us Brits are just used to using our driving licence as a form of ID but if you don't drive, you'll know that it's a pain not to have an ID card. I mean, pulling out your passport whilst outside a club isn't exactly sophisticated.

The documents to getting a TIE can be confusing, so I've put together a simplified list of all the things you need to apply for that plastic.

The Appointment

Firstly, I'd recommend booking a 'Cita Previa' - an appointment. The wait is long and there's no point preparing all the photocopies if you aren't able to give them to anyone. When I booked my appointment back in September, the next available appointment was late October.

If you speak Spanish you can skip reading these steps and apply away on this link!

Step 1

Select : the province you live in

Click Aceptar

Step 2

On the next page there will be two drop-down boxes.

In the second drop-down box, click the option that says "POLICÍA-EXP.TARJETA ASOCIADA AL ACUERDO DE RETIRADA CIUDADANOS BRITÁNICOS Y SUS FAMILIARES (BREXIT)"

Click Aceptar

Step 3

The next page will give you a list of all the things you need to take to the appointment. You can copy and paste it somewhere safe but I have listed the things below, so don't worry!

Click Entrar

Step 4

On the next page enter your NIE and your name and surname. Click Aceptar

Step 5

On the next page click Solicitar Cita

Choose the nearest centre to you to do the appointment. Click Siguiente.

Step 6

Enter your telephone number, email address twice and click Siguiente.

Step 7

Choose your preferred appointment. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to choose a preferred date nor time, you've just got to see what's available. If you can't do any of those available, you have to try this whole process the next day.

Make a note of the information of your appointment!

The Papers

Now you may think it's pretty obvious because you have the list online. But as I have been through the process, I can safely assure you that the list is not complete.

Here's what I needed:

  1. My flimsy green NIE 'card'.

  2. Modelo E-23 filled in and signed

  3. A valid passport and a photocopy of the photo-page and all pages which have a travel entry and exit stamp. On the appointment page it only states that a photocopy of the biometric page is needed. THIS IS A LIE! I also had to photocopy all the pages which had travel stamps. Why they care if I've been to Peru? It's beyond me.

  4. Modelo 790 Código 012. Complete this form and print it. Check the option ".Certificado de registro de residente comunitario o Tarjeta de residencia de familiar de un ciudadano de la Unión." Take it to your bank where you hold an account to pay €12. They will process the payment and stamp the forms. You must bring these originals with you to the appointment.

  5. A photo of yourself - it must meet the requirements of the government's standard photo criteria. Similar to a passport photo but slightly smaller at 32 x 26 mm. Also known as 'fotos de carnet'.

  6. Proof address; "Certificado de Empadronamiento". This must be a printed original dated within the last 3 months.

At the appointment (click here to read about my appointment) they will process everything and print you a receipt.

Pick Up

It is recommended that you book another appointment to pick up the TIE to avoid a long wait in the queue at the police station. I was told that it would take 30 days for my TIE to arrive.

The link to book an appointment is the same as above but in step 2 you just need to click "POLICÍA RECOGIDA DE TARJETA DE IDENTIDAD DE EXTRANJERO (TIE)".

I tried to book an appointment immediately but the appointments available were within 30 days so I had to wait a couple of days before booking an appointment.

I'll update here once I have picked up my TIE!

If you’ve had an experience that differs from this, please let me know and we can share the pain together to help prepare others.
